You can influence it but when left to their own devices, characters will steer the interaction, building context as you go. Most image generations cost between one and three tokens (while video generation can consume significantly more depending on length), resolution, and model selection. Rather than prioritising photorealism, it leans into stylised imagery, giving users a good degree of control over body proportions, textures, facial expressions, and the overall tone and aesthetic of each character. If your goal is a deep (long-term romantic companion or AI girlfriend connection), you may find it somewhat lacking. There is a free level that comes with limitations and both paid and free memberships require tokens for specific interactions.

Candy AI’s $3.99 is real, but it requires paying twelve months in advance and buys no more tokens than the $13.99 monthly plan. CrushOn AI offers the other useful recovery mechanism, pinning 4,000 to 8,000 characters of context that survives every automatic summary, so the facts that must not be forgotten cannot be summarised away. DreamGF is the exception — it sells the ability to edit her message responses directly, which turns a derailed scene into a corrected one instead of a wasted session. AI Allure comes closest on the media side and gets further on video specifically (and it publishes its tier prices), though it sells media as unmetered access rather than as a number per action. Its privacy notice states that chat content is used to train its models, though “not linked to specific users”, and the mobile app carries third-party advertising components that can identify a device across sites and over time. The free tier also deletes chat history after seven days of inactivity, so a free companion you visit fortnightly meets you as a stranger every time, paid tiers keep history for the membership period.

By enabling the memory editing function, users can tag particular facts for the AI to retain or discard, thus achieving precise oversight of their virtual partner’s narrative consistency. Across six weeks of rigorous evaluation (conversations seamlessly preserved continuity), recalling made-up backstories, personal tastes, and even humorous callbacks from initial exchanges. Many AI girlfriend applications operate on a hybrid billing model — where users pay a recurring fee while also purchasing dedicated in-app credits or tokens for features like image generation or voice messaging. The complimentary versions provide a practical way to assess a platform’s conversational flow and user experience before committing funds.

The free tier gives you around 50 messages per day with no topic restrictions. The 3D avatar is fun (the conversation quality is high), and the emotional intelligence is better than most paid alternatives. Then the moment you want to take things romantic, the app hits you with the $19.99/month paywall. It gives you unlimited text messages and daily check-ins. But for conversation quality on a free tier?

Most AI girlfriend apps focus on one thing. These new tools can soothe (seduce), and simulate love, but they can also reinforce harmful scripts if left unchecked. Some platforms face a hardware limitation referred to as “context window rot”. An explicit roleplay might trip a specific hidden safety guardrail hardcoded by that host, over-riding all custom personas and causing the bot to stall out, forget the scenario, or even deliver an immersion-breaking moral lecture. While many cater to erotic or romantic fantasies, the appeal often lies in the illusion of connection, affection, attention, and responsiveness, more than explicit content alone. Even when the AI simulates distress or resistance (it typically continues the interaction without further pushback), reinforcing dynamics of domination and control.
